  Farnam has this James GATES married to Emma Anna DICKINSON in 1881 in California; also, Farnam does not mention wife Alice BARRON. Now in the 1900 and 1910 Censuses of St. Joseph, MO, we see that James has been married twice and currently has a wife named Emma whom he married in 1895. Further, in the 1910 Census, mother-in-law Philma BRINK resides in his household. It is possible that either Emma or her mother was previously married to a DICKINSON; but in 1881, Emma would have been age 10. So it would appear that Farnam got something mixed up.
