Notes - The descendants of the Stanley SLAUNWHITE who is a merchant seaman and dies in England paint this picture of him:
a. He was a merchant seaman whose papers consistently give his DOB as 1 or 2 Apr 1890
b. He ran away to sea at age 9
c. His father may have been a seaman
d. He was in the RCMP for a time
e. He spelled his name as SLAUNWHITE
f. He had a sister named Violet whom he visited in London, England
g. Multiple ship's crew lists place his DOB abt. 1892
The first real clue to his identity is his sister Violet. There seems to be only one known Violet who could have lived for a time in England, and that is the d/o George Nelson SLAUNWHITE, who marries a British soldier in Haifax, in 1916.
There is no known Stanley whom this could be aside from the Stanley who is s/o George Nelson, The following is known of this Stanley:
a. He is born 02 Apr 1892 according to his WWI Attestation papers
b. He does not appear in the 1901 Census but is back in 1911
c. He marries Sadie Cameron in 1921 and they apparently move to Fox Harbour, Cumberland County, NS
d. He and Sadie have 4 children
e. His father was a stonemason/quarryman, not a seaman
To make a long and complicated story short, I think this is the same person, mainly beCAUSe the DOB on the WWI Attestation Papers of Stanley, s/o George Nelson, matches exactly that of the Stanley who is the merchant seaman who marries Anne McAlpine in England. I think what happened is this:
a. Stanley is b. 01 Apr 1892 and goes off to sea at age 9, which explains why he does not appear in the 1901 Census
b. After WWI he marries Sadie Cameron, and the interlude in Cumberland County may explain the family legend of him being in the RCMP
c. Sometime in the 1920's he goes back to sea and basically deserts his wife and children
d. After not having heard from him for a time, his wife declares herself a widow and remarries (this is not uncommon)
e. In 1929, Sadie says she is a widow when she remarries
f. In 1931, he marries Anne McAlpine, in England
Postscript: A Canadian grandson of Stanley SLAUNWHITE states that his father was told not to come to England to visit his father beCAUSe he (Stanley) did not want his English wife to know that he had a family in Canada. This appears to confirm the above.
