  • Notes
    • There is no known birth/baptismal record for Lucy Ann Slauenwhite. The first known document in which she appears is a marriage bond dated 10 July 1845. Also, in his notes, Kennedy Wainright states that Lucy Ann Slauenwhite born North West, was married on 10 July 1845 to James Fancy, son of George and Catherine nee Himmelman. Since it was a usual practice to execute a marriage bond on or about the day of the wedding, this lends credibility to the Wainwright data and thus to the North West location.

Cannon Harris' notes for the family of Johann Jacob Rudolf Slauenwhite state that this family lived at Inner North West and the notes contain twelve children of the family. At the bottom of the page (and not listed with the 12 children) he wrote “Lucy Ann m. James Fancy, 1845, both St. Paul's”.

Assuming Lucy Ann was born a Slauenwhite, by process of elimination she was most likely born to one of four fathers: Johann Jacob Rudolf, b. 1774; Johann Friedrich, b. 1782; Johann Georg, b. 1793; or Johann John, b. 1797. Of these, Johann Jacob Rudolf also is known to have lived at North West; Johann Friedrich lived on Big Tancook; Johann Georg lived at Mahone Bay, and Johann John may have lived at North West, which makes Johann Friedrich and Johann Georg unlikely parents.

Johan Jacob Rudolf does have a daughter named Anna Eleise, b. 8 Oct 1823. However, once she is born, and then Lucy Ann appears without trace. Given naming practices among those of German descent in Lunenburg County, it is highly probable that, if Anna Eleise survived, she went by the name Eleise (or an Anglicized version thereof) as an adult; for example, the other known Anna Eleise Slauenwhite did use the name “Leise” as an adult. It seems quite likely that an English-speaker might well hear or write Leise as Lucy, and I believe, but cannot document, instances where this did occur. Also, it is known that, after James Fancy's death, Lucy Ann married Frederick Solomon Ramey, and the fact that the civil birth record for one of their children--Frances Ann--shows the mother as “Anna Eliz”.

So I believe that Lucy and and Anna Eleise, d/o Johann Jacob Rudolf SCHLAGINTWEIT, are the same person.
