- The obit for John L. MANSFIELD (1893 - 1969) states that he was born at Westfield, Queens, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Milton Mansfield. There is only one known Milton MANSFIELD of Westfield, and he appears as a widower in the 1901 Census; however, he has no son named John born 1893. Also, in the 1901 Census, there is one (and only one) John MANSFIELD who is anything like the right age. That John MANSFIELD is almost exactly the right age and resides in Halifax City, Ward 2, Div 5, with his mother a “Mrs. MANSFIELD” whose age/DOB are not given, but who is also a widow. Since we know that the John MANSFIELD in the obit is born before 1901 and dies after 1901, this John MANFIELD of Halifax certainly appears to be him.
So, it would appear that his parents' widowhood is either geographic or a euphemism for a divorce. [Bob H]
