• Notes

  She appears in the Chester Township Book (which is notoriously inaccurate), with a DOB of 2 Mar 1799, while Farnam has her DOB as 5 Mar 1800. The following excerpt, taken from an article that appeared in the 03 Aug 1887 edition of the Montreal Gazette, would seem to favor Farnam's date. “A REMARKABLE FAMILY GATHERING.--On the 17th of July, 1887, one of the most remarkable gatherings occurred, which probably ever took place in the Dominion of Canada, at the home of Henry A. Bears, Murray River, Prince Edward Island. The mother, Mrs. Dorcas Bears, the eldest daughter of the late Abraham Whitman of Canso, N.S., now aged 87 and one-half years, still enjoying all her faculties and in good health, was favored with the gathering of her family of 13 children, who met for the first time, to greet her, as an unbroken family, except the father, who died some fourteen years ago, aged 77 years.” (The article goes on to list the names and ages of her children, as well as the number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.)
