  • Notes
    • He appears to have changed his name to DONOVAN about the time he entered the US in 1896. It is not know if any of these apply, but the usual reasons for a Nova Scotian changing their surname were:
      a.  A US immigration official mis-spelled their surname on immigration papers;
          b.  Evasion of detection by the authorities.  This was a common practice for Nova Scotians attempting to evade either a spouse, a scandal, or the sheriff;
          c.  They were illegitimate and later took the name of their biological father.
      Of course, it is also possible that he was born a DONOVAN and taken in by Peninah.
