- It is suspected that John and Thomas BROPHY are brothers; certainly John and Thomas married two SLAUENWHITE sisters. The parents of John are know to be Dennis and Clara, and Thomas is known to be “of Newfoundland”. Also, there is known to be a Dennis BROPHY in the Newfoundland Regiment. Finally, in 1819, one Sgt. Dennis BROPHY, late of the NS Regiment, states that he has a large family and his wife is in a debilitated condition, and since he therefore cannot afford to pay the 1 guinea fee for the Fishing Room at Prospect he has already been granted, he petitions to be exempted from the fee citing his long service in the NS Regiment. My guess is that he has already moved to Prospect when he files the petition.
It seems unlikely that Sgt. Dennis, with a large family and a debilitated wife, is the same person as the Dennis who subsequently marries Jane GLOVER and has eight children (that we know of). Rather, it seems more likely that he is the young Pvt. of the Newfoundland Regiment, and later Sgt. of the Nova Scotia Regiment, who is the father of John and probably Thomas. Further, I will hazard a guess that he was born in Ireland or of Irish parents, that he emigrated to Newfoundland, then moved to Nova Scotia, and finally settled at Lower Prospect.
There is no known specific evidence to show that Sgt. Dennis is also the father of Dennis, h/o Jane GLOVER, but given the Prospect connection, the name “Dennis” which appears in each generation, the fact that Dennis and Jane name their first daughter Clara, and the lack of any other candidates, the most reasonable hypothesis at the moment seems to be that Sgt. Dennis is the father of Dennis, h/o Jane.
James BROPHY, h/o Elizabeth SMITH, is even more of an enigma. All that is known of him at the moment is that his children are born at Lower Prospect. However, the fact he is one of at least four Catholic BROPHY's of the same generation who show up in Prospect shortly after Sgt. Dennis is granted a Fishing Room there would constitute a truly remarkable coincidence. Also, Dennis does name one of his sons James, and Thomas also names two of his sons Dennis and James.
So, for the moment at least, Dennis, James, John and Thomas will be carried as sons of Dennis BROPHY, lately a Sgt. in the British Army. [Bob H]
