Notes - He probably arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony between 1635-1638. On 13 Mar 1638, he was made a freeman, i.e. given voting rights, in the town of Dorchester, MA, but soon moved to Weymouth. He was one of the earliest settlers there, and “soon advanced to prominence”. He became Deacon of the church there, and was a town officer in 1643. In 1645 the General Court appointed him Ensign in the Military Company “to end small Causes”.
Family tradition holds that his wife, “with son Thomas (age 12). and others of their children”, came over around 1641, and Walt Whitman [the noted poet, who descends from bother Zechariah] claims that she arrived on the Truelove in 1640. Since it is known that daughter Hannah was born in Weymouth in Aug 1641, there would appear to be some connection between these two events. [Bob H]
